Graphite India Limited (GIL) is the pioneer in Carbon and Graphite products in India. It came into existence way back in 1960s. Starting with Graphite Electrodes, the core product of the company, it has entered into the coveted field of Specialty application of carbon and graphite. By further leveraging our core competence and economies of scale we intend to advance our production capacity cost efficiently. With efficient global partners and proximity of our manufacturing facilities to India's customers and sea ports, GIL is able to ensure timely deliveries to its customers. Corporate Milestones
1962Predecessor company erstwhile Graphite India Ltd. (GIL) formed by Bangur family and Great Lakes Carbon Corp. (USA).
1967Durgapur plant started production with 5K MT.
1971Fully integrated plant established in Bangalore.
1974Promoted Carbon Corp Ltd with horizontal transfer of technology to manufacture graphite electrodes in Nasik.
1984Production started in Graphite Vicarb India Ltd. (GVIL) of IGE and GRP division.
1989Backward integration through acquisition of two CPC manufacturing units in Barauni 30K MT. Amalgamation of GVIL with Carbon Corporation Ltd.
1994Carbon Corporation Ltd. name changed to Carbon Everflow Limited (CEL).
1998Carbon Paste Production started at Barauni with 10K MT.
1999Installed 18 MW power capacity in Karnataka.
2000Merger of two leading graphite electrode players in India. Erstwhile GIL merged with CEL and name changed to GIL.
2004Expanded Durgapur plant from 14K to 34K MT pa (78K MT group capacity). Acquired 18K MT facility in Nurnberg, Germany from Conradty.
2009Powmex Steel, an undertaking of GKW Limited, merged — adding 6,000 MT pa capacity.
2013Further expanded Durgapur plant from 34K to 54K MT pa, taking group capacity to 98K MT pa.
2018Graphite India made investment in General Graphene Corporation.
2019Permanent closure of Bengaluru Plant (13K MT).
2023Expanded Durgapur Plant from 54K to 67K MT. Sale of Bengaluru Land. Closure of German Electrode Plant. Investment in Godi India.
2024Installed solar power plant of 13.8 MWp and wind power plant of 18.9 MW.
2025Announced 25,000 TPA expansion plan. MOU with Govt. of Maharashtra for synthetic graphite anode material and allied projects.
